What is an HNC?
The HNC Diploma General Engineering awards aim to provide the following:
  • to provide an educational foundation for a range of careers in the engineering sector;
  • to enable students to make a contribution when employed in the engineering sector;
  • to provide flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for career development and as a basis for progression to graduate and postgraduate studies;
  • to develop a range of transferable skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life;
  • to provide flexibility within the programme that enables learners to specialise in the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or manufacturing engineering sector,
  • to equip students for progression from HNC to HND; and
  • to provide opportunities to develop, encourage and enhance students’ motivation for mechanical engineering ,electrical engineering or manufacturing engineering so that they are enabled to operate at a higher technician or associate professional level and to make an immediate contribution to their chosen area of employment.
What does the course consist of?

The course needs 120 credits to complete and ideally will be studied in 2 years part time. There are a number of mandatory units, 2 of which will be delivered in the first year. You will have a choice of specialist optional units, but you don’t need to choose them right away as the mandatory units will be delivered and assessed first.

  3. Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation

Specialist Optional Units (of which only 5 needed):

  • Mechanical Principles
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Health, Safety and Risk Assessment in Engineering
  • Business Management Techniques for Engineers
  • Engineering Design
  • Microprocessor Systems
  • Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles
  • Employability Skills
  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Management of Projects
  • Advanced Computer-aided Design Techniques
  • Managing the work of Individuals and Teams
  • Electrical & Electronic Principles
  • Further Maths for Engineering Technicians

If you already have the following at level 3, these can count towards the 120 credits

  • Electrical and Electronic Principles (10cr)
  • Further Mathematics for Technicians (10cr)
  • Further Electrical Principles (10cr)
Who is the Course aimed at?

This course is for those who would like CPD credits, or start a Higher Education. It can lead to an HND, in fact the HNC is nestled inside an HND (240 Cr). It could also count towards a full Bachelors degree as more and more Universities accept HNC’s as the 1st year.

This course is ideal if you are unable to attend a college or university, due to work or family commitments. If you are looking to further your career or you need the qualifications for a promotion or career change, this course deals with materials around Engineering,

What are the entry requirements?

A level 3 qualification, such as BTEC Diploma in Engineering or A levels, however if you don’t have these but do have experience in the workplace, then contact us and we can discuss your needs. Typically 80 UCAS points is needed.

The content is heavy on Science and as such there is a high content of maths. We can assess your maths ability using our BKSB Advanced Maths assessment tool, to see if you are at the right level, free of charge.

Non-native English speakers and those students who have not had their final two years of schooling in English will need to demonstrate one of the following upon entry:

  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2
  • IELTS 5.5 (including 5.5 for reading and writing)
  • PTE 51
  • or equivalent,
Who is this Course for?

For those working as technicians, who would like to take the next step, or those who would like a career change.

As this is level 4, once complete you may be eligible for Professional Recognition with institutes such as the Institute of Engineering & Technology

This is a complete course, but can be continued with the HND Diploma, or jump straight in to a full degree course on the 2nd year.
