What is an HNC?
The HNC/D Diploma in General Engineering awards aim to provide the following:
  • to provide an educational foundation for a range of careers in the engineering sector;
  • to enable students to make a contribution when employed in the engineering sector;
  • to provide flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for career development and as a basis for progression to graduate and postgraduate studies;
  • to develop a range of transferable skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life;
  • to provide flexibility within the programme that enables learners to specialise in the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or manufacturing engineering sector,
  • to equip students for progression from HNC to HND; and
  • to provide opportunities to develop, encourage and enhance students’ motivation for mechanical engineering ,electrical engineering or manufacturing engineering so that they are enabled to operate at a higher technician or associate professional level and to make an immediate contribution to their chosen area of employment.
What does the course consist of?

The HNC course needs 120 credits to complete and ideally will be studied in 2 years part time.  There are a number of mandatory units, 2 of which will be delivered in the first year. You will have a choice of specialist optional units, but you don’t need to choose them right away as the mandatory units will be delivered and assessed first.

Analytical Methods for Engineers – Credit Value 15 QCF Level 4

 

This unit will provide the analytical knowledge and techniques needed to carry out a range of engineering tasks and will provide a base for further study of engineering mathematics.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit a learner will:

  1. Be able to analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using algebraic methods
  2. Be able to analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using trigonometric methods
  3. Be able to analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using calculus
  4. Be able to analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using statistics and probability
Engineering Science  – Credit Value 15 QCF Level 4

 

This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of the mechanical and electrical principles that underpin mechanical and electrically focused engineering systems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit a learner will:

  1. Be able to determine the behavioural characteristics of elements of static engineering systems
  2. Be able to determine the behavioural characteristics of elements of dynamic engineering systems
  3. Be able to apply DC theory to solve electrical and electronic engineering problems
  4. Be able to apply single phase AC theory to solve electrical and electronic engineering problems
Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation – Credit Value 20 QCF Level 5

 

This unit provides opportunities to develop skills in decision making, problem solving and communication integrated with the skills and knowledge developed in many of the other units within the programme to complete a realistic project.

This unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of an extended range of mechanical principles that underpin the design and operation of mechanical engineering systems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit a learner will:

  1. Be able to determine the behavioural characteristics of materials subjected to complex loading systems
  2. Be able to determine the behavioural characteristics of loaded beams and cylinders
  3. Be able to determine the dynamic parameters of power transmission system elements

Electrical and Electronic Principles – Credit Value 15 QCF Level 5

 

This unit provides an understanding of electrical and electronic principles used in a range of engineering careers and provides the basis for further study of more specialist areas of electrical/electronic engineering.

On successful completion of this unit a learner will:

  1. Be able to apply electrical and electronic circuit theory
  2. Be able to apply two-port network models
  3. Understand the use of complex waves

Health, Safety and Risk Assessment in Engineering – Credit Value 15 QCF Level 4

 

This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of health and safety planning, implementation and legislation within an engineering environment.

This unit investigates the functions, structures and inter-relationships of an engineering business. Learners will apply the skills of costing, financial planning and control associated with engineered products or services.

Electrical and Electronic Principles – Credit Value 10 QCF Level 3

 

This unit aims to give learners an understanding of the underlying physical principles on which electrical and electronic devices and circuits depend.

The modern world relies on electrical and electronic devices — from mobile telephones to jet aeroplanes, these devices have had an enormous impact on the way we live today. Without early engineers, such as Faraday and Lenz, who studied the then new concept of electricity, many of the inventions we now take for granted would not have been made.

  2. Understand the concepts of capacitance and determine capacitance values in DC circuits

Further Mathematics for Technicians – Credit Value 10 QCF Level 3

 

Mathematics is an essential tool for any electrical or mechanical engineering technician. This unit has been designed to further enhance learners’ knowledge of mathematical principles, particularly for those considering progressing to a higher education qualification in engineering. With this in mind, the learning outcomes offer greater emphasis to the engineering application of mathematics. For example, learners could use an integral calculus method to obtain the root mean square (RMS) value of a sine wave over a half cycle.

Further Electrical Principles – Credit Value 10 QCF Level 3

 

 

This unit gives learners the opportunity to apply practical and theoretical principles of electrical engineering to the development, manufacture and servicing of complex electrical and electronic systems.

The unit will extend learners’ understanding of simple direct current (DC) circuits that can be solved by Ohm’s law and Kirchhoff’s laws. This will require learners to apply advanced circuit analysis theorems such as Thévenin’s, Norton’s and the maximum power transfer theorems for DC networks.

On successful completion of this unit a learner will:

  1. Be able to apply direct current (DC) circuit analysis methods and consider the types, construction and characteristics of a DC motor and generator
  2. Understand the transient behaviour of resistor-capacitor (RC) and resistor-inductor (RL) DC circuits
  3. Be able to apply single-phase alternating current (AC) theory
  4. Be able to apply three-phase alternating current (AC) theory

 

Who is the Course aimed at?

This course is for those who would like CPD credits, or start a Higher Education. It can lead to an HND, in fact the HNC is nestled inside an HND (240 Cr). It could also count towards a full Bachelors degree as more and more Universities accept HNC’s as the 1st year.

This course is ideal if you are unable to attend a college or university, due to work or family commitments. If you are looking to further your career or you need the qualifications for a promotion or career change, this course deals with materials around Engineering,

What are the entry requirements?

A level 3 qualification, such as BTEC Diploma in Engineering or A levels, however if you don’t have these but do have experience in the workplace, then contact us and we can discuss your needs. Typically 80 UCAS points is needed.

The content is heavy on Science and as such there is a high content of maths. We can assess your maths ability using our BKSB Advanced Maths assessment tool, to see if you are at the right level, free of charge.

Non-native English speakers and those students who have not had their final two years of schooling in English will need to demonstrate one of the following upon entry:

  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2
  • IELTS 5.5 (including 5.5 for reading and writing)
  • PTE 51
  • or equivalent,
