What is BTEC National?
This qualification is a technical level qualification which will help the learner to move up to a Higher Education (HE) qualification. It will give the learner an excellent foundation at technician level and can be incorporated into an apprenticeship. There are mandatory units which are common to all engineering disciplines, and the optional units to make up the 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180 credits.

Who is the Course aimed at?

This course is ideal if you are unable to attend a college or university, due to work or family commitments. If you are looking to further your career or you need the qualifications for a promotion or career change, this course deals with material around engineering, so mathematical concepts feature in some units.

What are the entry requirements?

Level 2 qualifications, such as GCSE’s in Maths, English, Science or an equivalent BTEC First Diploma however if you don’t have these but do have experience in the workplace, then contact us and we can discuss your needs.

Non-native English speakers and those students who have not had their final two years of schooling in English will need to demonstrate one of the following upon entry:

  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2
  • IELTS 5.5 (including 5.5 for reading and writing)
  • PTE 51
  • or equivalent,
How is the course Graded?

Learners will be awarded a merit or distinction or distinction* qualification grade (or combination of these grades appropriate to the qualification) by the aggregation of points gained through the successful achievement of individual units. The number of points available is dependent on the unit level and grade achieved, and the credit size of the unit (as shown in the points available for credits achieved at different QCF levels and unit grades below).

Learners who achieve the correct number of points within the ranges shown in the ‘qualification grade’ table will achieve the qualification merit or distinction or distinction* grade (or combinations of these grades appropriate to the qualification).

What can I progress to after this course?

Students who successfully achieve a Certificate may be able to progress to a further Level 3 course such as a Subsidiary diploma. This may require relevant mapping of the learning outcomes achieved. Students wishing to progress onto one of our HNC programs will need to pass a Subsidiary Diploma at Merit or above (80 UCAS Points).

Semester: Learning & Development will support students in making applications to suitable programmes for their own programmes and those at other institutions.
