How do you become an NVQ Assessor?
To become a qualified NVQ Assessor you will need this qualification. These qualifications replace the A1 and A2 qualifications. They are part of the new suite of qualifications for assessors, internal quality assurers (IQA) and external quality assurers (EQA).
There is a mix of practical units which require you to be in a teaching or training role so that evidence can be gartered. For unit 009 – you will need to be assessing students on a competence based course, such as an NVQ to gather evidence.
BTEC Level 3 Assessing Vocational Achievement Unit Aim
The aim of this unit is to assess a learning and development practitioner’s knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of assessment.

- LO2: Understand different types of assessment method
- LO3: Understand how to plan assessment
- LO4: Understand how to involve learners and others in assessment
- LO5: Understand how to make assessment decisions
- LO6: Understand quality assurance of the assessment process
- LO7: Understand how to manage information relating to assessment
- LO8: Understand the legal and good practice requirements in relation to assessment
Target groups
This is a valuable unit for all trainers and teachers of vocational subjects that involve assessment of occupational competence in a work environment.
- LO1: Be able to plan the assessment of occupational competence
- LO2: Be able to make assessment decisions about occupational competence
- LO3: Be able to provide required information following the assessment of occupational competence
- LO4: Be able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing occupational competence
Unit aim
The aim of this unit is to assess a learning and development practitioner’s (NVQ Assessor) performance in carrying out the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding outside of the work environment. Assessment methods include: assessments of the learner in simulated environments, skills tests, oral and written questions, assignments, projects, case studies, recognising prior learning.
The unit does not require the design of assessments.

- LO2: Be able to carry out assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
- LO3: Be able to provide required information following the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
- LO4: Be able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
You must be working as a teacher/trainer/tutor/assessor in order to gather evidence of good practice.
There are no minimum entry requirements, however a good understanding of English and Maths is essential. We can assess your abilities using the BKSB system.
Non-native English speakers and those students who have not had their final two years of schooling in English will need to demonstrate one of the following upon entry:
- Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2
- IELTS 5.5 (including 5.5 for reading and writing)
- PTE 51
- or equivalent
These qualifications will be required for:
- Any NVQ Assessor and verifiers involved in National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) for the next three years. Those who deliver these qualifications will need to be qualified to meet the requirements of the NVQ Code of Practice and Sector Skills Councils assessment strategies.
- Assessors and quality assurance staff who deliver qualifications that use the term ‘NVQ’ in their title
- Depending on the assessment strategies set by individual Sector Skills Councils, some staff, who are assessing and quality assuring qualifications that do not use the term ‘NVQ’ in their titles, but whose purpose is to confirm occupational competence, will need to hold IQA or EQA qualifications.
