What is the Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)?

This is a Level 2 qualification. The Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) forms part of an overall apprenticeship and is the Foundation Competence, but can be delivered stand-alone. It is designed to showcase your skills and knowledge of typical workshop equipment, such as lathes, hand fitting techniques, working with wiring and producing assemblies.

To fully comply with the Foundation Competence, learners will need to choose 6 of the following:

  • Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations – cannot be taken with Unit 19 2 140
  • Preparing and using Milling Machines – cannot be taken with Unit 19 2 140
  • Preparing and using Semi-Automatic MIG, MAG and Flux Cored Arc Welding Equipment – cannot be taken with Unit 19 2 140
  • Assembling and Testing Electronic Circuits
  • Maintaining Electronic Equipment/Systems
  • Preparing and using Industrial Robots
  • General Turning, Milling and Welding Applications – cannot be taken with Units 13, 14 or 15 2 140
  • Forming and Assembling Pipework Systems
  • Preparing and Proving CNC Machine Tool Programs
  • Producing Sheet Metal Components and Assemblies
  • Maintaining and Testing Process Instrumentation and Control Devices
  • Producing Components by Rapid Prototyping Techniques
  • Wiring and Testing Vehicle Electrical Equipment and Circuits

Check you have the facilities to complete this qualification

For the Diploma, 10 units are needed, 4 of which are mandatory.

The other 6 units will depend on what work you do in the workplace.  The unit title give a good indication of what the content is. So please select at least 6 units which you will be asked further questions on. These are to check you have the correct facilities, tools and test equipment available in order to provide evidence.

If you are unable to fully cover 6 optional units, then we can look at a different qualification.
